Mum always said that March was in like a lion and out like a lamb. It will be interesting to see whether that is the case this year.
I looked back at photos from last year at Asylum Lake. At the beginning of the month the Red-Winged Blackbirds returned. I have photos of Canadian Geese on the ice. Chipmunks coming out of hibernation and the hawks that hunt them. The bluebirds are claiming houses before Tree Swallows return. Daffodils are poking up through leaves and some snowdrops too. Towards the end of the month the daffodils are really blooming. There were some really cool morning frosts that made for beautiful morning photos.
I can't wait to see what March brings this year!
The first week of March saw sunny skies at the lake. Most of the snow has disappeared.
There is still ice on the paths though!
At the beavers' lodge there are signs that they are beginning to stir.
The ice is beginning the thin and there is even a gap close to the lodge! I hope we see them again soon.
This first week of March also brings me my first sighting of a male Red-winged Blackbird. The males return first and the females follow behind. Their distinctive song heralds in the beginning of spring.
It is still cold enough out that you can see their breath in the morning air.
The Red-Tailed Hawk was around this first week looking for food. There are lots of squirrels and chipmunks around now.
This one was hoping he wouldn't be caught! Cheeky little thing.
Some lovely mornings this week
Saw deer enjoying the sunshine
Including one who still had his antlers!
There were an assortment of Lost & Found including - strangely - a mirror. I'm not quite sure how someone lost that!
I'm hoping as we venture on further into March we'll see more spring. Looking at the lake we still have a long way to go!
