A new week at Asylum Lake. Monday dawns grey and dreary. There is ice coming and snow, but first thing it all just looks rather dull.
The geese have returned to the lake and are hanging out down by the beavers' lodge on the ice.
The snowdrops are getting a coat of ice.
The snow starts to cover the woods and trees
The water down by the lake is receding a little more. One of my favourite views is beginning to return - the reflection in the lake!
The geese are still enjoying the ice. They often build nests close to here and I'm wondering whether they are beginning to stake out their claim. There has been a pair down by the point each morning.
The beavers must have been out too! There is new chewing on one of the trees right by the lodge. It makes me wonder if they have a plan. Will the tree fall in the right direction? If they get it wrong the tree could fall right on top of their lodge!
Which way will it fall? It's pretty close! No beaver sightings, but there was a muskrat!
There have been lots of deer around though. Plenty of them through the woods.
I've been hearing and seeing (at a distance) Red-tailed hawks and Sandhill Cranes. Surely this is the beginning of the end of winter!
I caught sight of this girl too. I love these woodpeckers.
This one is a female. The males have a red mustache. She was up in the trees making lots of noise! Pileated woodpeckers have quite a distinctive call. They are the largest woodpecker in North America. They are about the size of a crow. You can usually tell when a pileated woodpecker has been around as the holes they make are oblong shaped rather than circular.
I saw our resident squirrel again! So far he has survived all the hawks that seem to be flying around!
I'm always excited to see him!
