April 2nd - 8th - Beavers

I really enjoy watching the beavers down at the lake. Not everyone likes them. Or rather they don't like the damage they do to the trees. There are a lot of downed trees, but it seems to run in cycles. Usually there is a frenzy of tree downing in the Spring after the lake first thaws and later in the Autumn just before the lake freezes over again. This year has been no exception. It seems that every morning when I walk there is a little more evidence of gnawing on trees.

In the second photo you can see where wire has been placed around the tree to prevent the beavers from downing it. WMU (who owns the preserve) has decided to do this to some of the younger Oak trees that the beavers tend to prefer. There are still lots of trees for them to take!

The Beavers' Lodge certainly seems to be growing!

I have certainly seen a lot of the beavers this week. They are always fun to watch. I think sometimes they are just as curious about me as I am about them. Sometimes one comes up and takes a look before quietly ducking back under the water. They are so quiet when they surface and go back down. The only time I really hear them is when they are slapping their tails if annoyed or feeling threatened.

Sometimes you can see them eating on something

And once in a while you can see them out of the lake

Some wonderful beaver facts

* Beavers can't breathe underwater but can hold their breath up to fifteen minutes as they swim around under the surface to reach the entrance to their lodges.

* Beavers are social animals. They live in colonies

* They can live up to 19 years!
